If you’re one of those people who thinks the language here is Mexican, you’re in for a world of trouble. If you’re one of those people who refuses to speak another language and believes that they (the locals) owe it to you to speak English because that’s what you speak, you’re in for even more trouble.
Familiar chain stores such as Walmart and Home Depot are not English-spoken here. You may think they are because you have them in your home town and everyone there speaks English. People here do not speak English, even at places like Sam’s Club, Victoria’s Secret, H & M, Old Navy, Sephora, Home Depot, Swarovski and Walmart. All Canada/US/European chain stores that we have here in Playa del Carmen.
Many times I’ve seen social media posts about people coming to visit Cancun or Playa del Carmen and assuming the official language is Mexican (whatever that’s supposed to be). I also hate to admit how often I’ve been approached in these common stores by flustered American shoppers who are frustrated and confused because “the people here don’t speak English”.
What do they expect?? Spanish is the second language of the Unites States. Why don’t more Americans speak even basic Spanish?
Regardless, this is Spanish-speaking territory. The official language of Mexico is Spanish and is what you will have to learn if you intend to live in Mexico.
